In the last article we discovered that the Bible is unique in its survival. We learned there are many more copies of the New Testament than any other ancient writing, and we can trust that the Bible we have today is the same as when it was originally written. This article is the fourth in a series exploring some of the ways the Bible is not only unique, but also how we can rely on it for its accuracy and trust that it is indeed God’s Holy and Divine Word!
In this article we will again discuss how the Bible is unique in its survival! Not only is the Bible unique in terms of the time differential and the number of copies, but there is substantial evidence in the accuracy of the Bible from the field of archaeology as well.
One of the most well known archaeological discoveries in history is the Dead Sea Scrolls! The Dead Sea Scrolls were initially discovered in caves near the Dead Sea by shepherds in late 1946 or early 1947. Many archaeologists have excavated the area and found many scrolls, some of them are copies of the Old Testament dating back to over 300 years before Christ! One of the finds were copies of the book of Isaiah. Some have tried to argue in the past, that the prophecies of Isaiah must have been written after the fact. We will discuss prophecies in a future article, Lord willing, but the Dead Sea Scrolls prove that Isaiah wrote his prophecies hundreds of years before Jesus was born!
There have been many attacks against the historicity of biblical claims in the past. For many years people claimed the Hittites never existed, but in 1876 and again in 1906, evidence of the Hittite capital and language was discovered in Boghaz-koy located in Turkey.
The destruction of Sodom and Gamorrah is another event skeptics have questioned in the past. In 1924 Dr. William Albright claimed to find the remains of these cities near the Dead Sea in Israel. Years later, when excavation was complete, it was confirmed that these cities had been destroyed by fire! Dr. Bryant Wood in an article written in 1990 states, “The evidence would suggest that this site of Bab edh-Drha is the biblical city of Sodom.”
There have been many other claims made by skeptics in the past. For more information about Bible proofs from the field of archaeology, please visit: https://bible.org/article/archaeology-and-old-testament
It is my hope and prayer that this article will serve to strengthen your faith! The Bible is more than just a book! Not only is it unique in all these ways we have been discussing, but it is the word of God and is intended for us to follow!
Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way.
105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.(KJV)
Thank you for reading. I hope to explore this topic further in future articles.
